With a heavy heart //

She looked at the world
in all its trouble,
in all its beauty.

Weighed down by the fractures
of a society
too broken, it seemed,
to heal.

How far will we go?
she asked,
to ignore the cries
of those suffering.

The hands of power
so far removed
from the most marginalized
among us.

Too engrossed in ourselves
to feel the pain
of those unlike us.

So privileged
to be able
to turn away
from the brokenhearted.

What can we do,
but hold strong
to the hope that has
always guided us through.

With a heavy heart,
she believed
there was still enough good
too prevail.
